Founded in 1907 the Grantham Butter Factory (Queensland) prospered in the heart of dairy and agricultural communities. Closing in 1971 it was left derelict.
Making global headlines; without warning, in 2011 the town was hit by a freak wall of water from the horrific #QldFloods. Tragically, many lives were lost. The community is slowly rebuilding their hearts and their homes.
Rotary International (Toowoomba South) have stepped in to resurrect the Grantham Butter Factory with the help of benefactors and compassionate businesses to create a Community Hub. Incorporating a function centre, commercial kitchen & cafe / restaurant, where everyone can feel safe and nurtured.

Design brief: to create a commercial kitchen, incorporating a cafe / restaurant which can also operate as a reception and function centre in the main hall.

Due to the variety of groups and skills that would be using the facilities (i.e. chefs, cooks, volunteers), efficiencies in the café were considered carefully.  Additional equipment and plating spaces for functions were included which can double as café food  preparation benches during normal serving Monday to Friday.

The foodservice design was relatively straight forward with the usual considerations of existing columns and building structures, drainage and electrical. However, space for the design of mechanical ventilation was limited due to a newly added mezzanine level above the kitchen. Therefore kitchen exhaust ductwork, fans and outlets have been located at the end of the building so as to not interfere with the original building facade. Choice of equipment had to be flexible for multiple purpose menus and capacity and easy to operate because of the diverse group of potential users.

The overall project works has included major renovation and restoraton works, specialised engineering, asbestos and waste removal, landscaping, roof structure repair and replacement, ceiling and insulation replacements, new sewer mains, drainage and pumping station, lighting and power upgrades, window repairs and replacement, roadworks and car park replacement, new mezzanine floor and addition of commercial kitchen and restaurant / cafe / function facilities.
